Young Aussie speed skater Deanna Lockett uses Steven Bradbury tactic to progress at Sochi

AUSTRALIAN teenage speed skater Deanna Lockett has scraped into the 1000-metre short track quarter-finals, using Steven Bradbury’s tactic of lurking at the back of the pack.
The 18-year-old’s luck was in when Canadian Marianne St-Gelais clipped the skate of the Netherlands’ Jorien ter Mors, sending both of them to the floor.
Lockett then sailed past Austria’s Veronika Windisch to win the race and score a place in the quarter finals.
Lockett did not perform to expectations in the 1500 metres where she did not make the final rounds.
“I think in the 1500 metres I was pretty unlucky and my race was not very good but God was fair and he gave me a better opportunity in the 1000,” she said.
“I was conserving energy for the last two laps when I was planning to do a pass but I didn’t have to. I just had to make sure I stayed on my feet and didn’t fall over as well.”
