In recent years, he has joined forces with his son Dominik, where they have built up a successful partnership in the ring and were drafted to the Raw brand earlier this year.

But they copped a huge blow when Rey suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Bobby Lashley on Raw this week.

Lashley destroyed Rey, throwing him down on the canvas, tossing him out of the ring and even slamming his head against the ring post.

“That was Rey Mysterio’s skull colliding with the ring post courtesy of the almighty Bobby Lashley,” the commentator described the action.

After the brutal battering, Rey eventually tapped out and was tended to by son Dominik and WWE staff.

WWE official Adam Pearce had seen enough to take Rey out of Raw’s team for the upcoming Survivor Series.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is literally my job to make sure we have the best competition possible at Survivor Series,” he announced to the crowd.

“That’s why it pains me to say that for the wellbeing of team Raw but more importantly for the wellbeing of Rey Mysterio, I am unfortunately am left with no choice.

“I must remove Rey Mysterio from the Raw Survivor Series team with a replacement to be named later.”

Then in bizarre scenes, up-and-coming WWE star Austin Theory, who has been feuding with the Mysterio’s after defeating both Rey and Dominik, jumped in the ring and taunted them, taking selfies with the injured Rey lying helpless behind him.

Pearce took a liking to Theory’s animosity and named him as Rey’s replacement for Survivor.

“Hang on, Austin Theory, I like your style,” he said with great theatrics.

“Therefore replacing Rey Mysterio on Raw Survivor Series team — Austin Theory.”

It was just further insult to the Mysterio family after Dominik was also taken out of the Survivor line-up for Lashley, having lost to him the previous week.

Speaking to Kayo this week on the Rey Mysterio Experience, Rey said he would love to pass on his iconic ring name to Dominik when he retires, just like his uncle, who was also a successful wrestler, allowed him to have the name.

“Absolutely, I would definitely love to,” Rey said.

“Of course just like my uncle did with me, I had to earn it and it took me almost three years to earn that.

“But once it was given to me I cherished it and I took it to the next level. I would expect that my son is thinking the same way as I did.

“If the name one day is passed on to him, that he’s going to be able to take it to the next level.

Rey said he was pleased with how quickly Dominik’s career was progressing after only taking up wrestling in his late teens but hopes his son will able to forge his own legacy in the ring.

“I always tell him that he’s going to be better than me and that he’s going to take the name to another level,” he said.

“That’s what I would love to see from him. I don’t expect it from him but I would love for him to just keep growing. He has the potential, he has the dedication.

“It’s a business that isn’t easy especially living in the shadows of his father. My name and what I’ve done for this industry has been incredible.

“To be able to open up doors for other talent that have my size and my stature has been unbelievable.

“But with Dom, I think he’s finally brushed off trying to fill in my shoes and start his own journey. He is his own self and make something out of that.”
