THE world of professional surfing has taken a significant hit of late, with the community rocked by the shock of Mick Fanning’s close call with a shark at the J-Bay Open.

With everyone’s minds locked firmly on the horrors of the last few weeks, many seem to have forgotten just how impressively skilled these athletes really are.

South African surfer Jordy Smith however, has launched his sport into the spotlight again — and this time there are no sharks in sight.

Surfing just off the coast of Western Australia, the 27-year-old launched one of the biggest 360 degree aerial manoeuvres ever performed on a surf board.

Doing his best snowboarding impression, Smith was airborne for a seriously long time before straightening up and landing back down the wave as smoothly as he had taken off.

Now that is seriously impressive.

Smith is currently ranked 22nd in the Samsung Galaxy Championship tour. He will be competing in the Billabong Pro in Tahiti next Friday.
