PARALYMPIC legend and Oz Day 10km record breaker Kurt Fearnley admits wins don’t come as easily as they used to but he still plans to push on until at least the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Fearnley, who last won the Oz Day 10km in Sydney in 2012, on Thursday broke Louise Sauvage’s record of 10 wins at the annual Australia Day race which regularly attracts the best wheelchair racers in the world.
Fearnley’s Australian Paralympic teammate Madison de Rosario won the women’s race.
“I know the days of these sorts of victories are limited so I’m just thrilled’’ said the Newcastle-based athlete who retired from the Paralympic arena after 16 years of competition and a silver in the marathon in Rio.
“All roads are leading to the Commonwealth Games right now.
“I may find it hard to go beyond that one. But ask me about that the day after I race.’’
Fearnley claimed his record 11th win with a convincing defeat of Japan’s Sho Watanabe, with Australian Jake Lappin in third.
De Rosario lead home an Australian cleansweep of the women’s event with her victory over Jemima Moore and Christie Dawes.
“I won in 2012 and 2013 so there’s been a bit of a gap between wins,’’ de Rozario, 23, said.
The wheelchair racer, who won two silvers in Rio, said the win was a big confidence boost ahead of the world championships in London mid year.
