NFL Blitz: Arrowhead is world’s loudest stadium, J.J. Watt scores again, Bill Belichick smiles, Brad Wing’s epic fail
EARDRUM-BUSTING NFL fans in Kansas City have set a new benchmark. But how loud does the loudest stadium have to be to claim a new world record?
THE first set of byes took place in week four, Philadelphia’s winning streak ended, the Cowboys found their mojo and rookie quarterbacks stole headlines. But check out what you might’ve missed around the league.
CHIEFS FANS GET LOUD, REALLY LOUD
Arrowhead is an intimidating venue for visitors as is. The ‘chop’ chant, the red-clad, 76,000 capacity crowd in that colosseum of a stadium — it’s something else.
But add the wild, endless, deafening cheers of all those fans in unison, and you’ve got one big case of noise pollution.
So much so that the Chiefs faithful regained the title of the Guiness World Records ‘Loudest Stadium in the World’ off previous noisemakers in Seattle with an incredible 142.2dB level.

AUSSIES IN ACTION
Brad Wing copped an awful backlash from fans after Pittsburgh’s last minute loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week four. Right up until the two minute warning, the Steelers were looking likely to claim the win at 24-20. With 50 seconds left in regulation time Wing just had to get the ball into Tampa Bay territory, and the clock and Steelers defence should have taken care of the rest.
A woeful 29 yard punt followed, the ball was downed inside Pittsburgh’s half and soon enough Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon found Vincent Jackson for the game-winning touchdown with seconds to play. Wing became the scapegoat for the unbelievable defeat, trending in the US on Twitter. But he wouldn’t have liked what the fans were saying.
This #PittsburghSteelers loss is brought to you by Brad Wing... my god

@bwing38 way to shank that punt bruh

No way Brad Wing is on the roster next week. Back to Australia you hack. #Steelers
â DK (@TheDKeeling) September 28, 2014
The world should know that Brad Wing is the worst punter to ever punt a ball in his whole life. #steelers

im pretty sure we can dig up a punter better than brad wing in a crack house

And then it got really nasty.
One cheeky Steelers fan hacked Wing’s Wikipedia page, making a not-so-flattering addition to his bio that also had a crack at all of his compatriots. Ouch. Thankfully, the page has since been restored to it’s original state.

TOUCHDOWN FOR WATT
When you’re hot, you’re hot. And Texans defensive tank J.J. Watt is on fire right now. This week he scored another touchdown with a brilliantly read intercept.
So what do LeSean McCoy, Matt Forte, Eddie Lacy and Houston’s Arian Foster now have in common? Watt has scored more touchdowns than each of these offensive studs. These are guys whose main job is to score touchdowns, and in defense Watt has already surpassed them. Incredible.
FAVRE GETS RID OF THAT AWFUL BEARD
Since his days of throwing over 500 touchdowns ended in 2010, legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre has been rocking a new look. The Super Bowl champ’s unkempt beard has finally gotten the chop though, thanks to a new ad ‘The Gunslinger’ is featured in.
The television spot for MicroTouch not only shows an excellent before-and-after of Favre with and without a beard, but also gives a bit of insight into his life right now — riding big tractors in muscle shirts.
SWEAR JAR, GENO
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was forced to apologise after being recorded swearing at home fans who jeered him during his team’s loss against Detroit. The MetLife Stadium faithful were particularly fed up with the second year starter when his hail mary pass in the final moments of the game wasn’t even thrown in play, as the Jets’ 24-17 loss to the Lions took their season record to 1-3. Can you blame them? That hail mary was terrible.
BELICHICK SMILES
No, really. It happened.
In the press conference after the New England Patriots went down in humiliating fashion to Kansas City, coach Bill Belichick was confronted by questions over his benching of Tom Brady for handsome new quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. The rookie back-up did more with New England’s horrendous offense in the final 10 minutes than Brady was able to manage all game, fuelling speculation that Brady’s time is up, and Garoppolo is the new sheriff in town.
Belichick rarely gives away much, but the questioning got a reaction from the three-time Super Bowl winning head coach.
ANTONIO’S BIZARRE DANCE
So Pittsburgh receiver Antonio Brown thinks he can dance? No. But he does a mean impression of a spinning NFL ball. Just look at that technique. Five stars.
Unfortunately the celebration left the Steelers with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Worth it.
FANTASY WATCH
Jerick McKinnon — Teammate Matt Asiata might have vultured a few close range touchdowns this week, but McKinnon looks to be the more explosive back, and will earn a bigger slice of the Minnesota pie as Adrian Peterson’s indefinite absence continues.
Travis Kelce — Consider him the Gronk of the heartland. Need a tight end? This Kansas City kid has size, athleticism, and a great set of paws.
Eli Manning — If you drafted RGIII or Tom Brady, and in desperate need of a quarterback with potential for 20+ points, Manning seems to be finding his groove in the new offense and could be what you need to fill the void at QB. It doesn’t come without risk, of course.
Frank Gore — San Francisco and Colin Kaepernick’s ego finally got out of the way and gave the ball to Frank ‘The Tank’, as the running back got back to form and trampled the Eagles for over 100 yards and a score.
Terrence Williams — If teams continue to double-up on Dez Bryant while Tony Romo is throwing lasers, Williams has shown he is more than capable of being a genuinely lethal red zone target.
Jamaal Charles — Any concerns over a lingering ankle problem were dispelled with a treble of touchdowns against the patchy Pats D. If he’s been on your bench, start that sucker, ASAP.
San Diego D — Facing Geno and the Jets this week, and Oakland in week five, we’re backing the Chargers to continue their consistent production of valuable defensive points, force a few turnovers and maybe even get a cheeky touchdown.
VINCE LOMBARDI QUOTE OF THE WEEK
This one goes out to E.J. Manuel, the young Bills quarterback who has been benched, giving starting honours to veteran Kyle Orton for Buffalo’s match-up against Detroit next week.
“Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will all be judged on one thing: the result.”
