AUSTRALIA’S first Olympic triathlon medallist, first Olympic champion and first man to win a trio of world title have all been honoured for their feats by being named in their sports Hall of Fame.
Sydney’s Michellie Jones, a two-time world champion who won silver at the sports Olympic debut in 2000 before going on to become a Hawaii ironman champion, was revealed as one of the three Australians this morning.
Jones is still the only Australian female to win a world title over the Olympic and ironman distance.
Joining her in the Hall of Fame was Sydney Games team-mate Peter Robertson, a three-time world champion over the Olympic distance.
Triple world champion Emma Snowsill, the first — and only — Australian to win an Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008, was the third inclusion.
Snowsill is considered one of the greatest triathletes in history and also won a Commonwealth Games gold medal
The inclusions pay tribute to Australia which until recently was the top triathlon nation in the world.
Interestingly Robertson is still competing with the Hawaii ironman one of his goals.
Jones also still competes and is hopeful of being in Ruio next year at the Paralympics as a guide for top hope Katie Kelly.
One of Snowsill’s fiercest rivals, Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes, was also inducted along with Canadian Sydney Olympic gold medallist Simon Whitfield and 2004 Olympic gold medallist Hamish Carter of New Zealand.
