She has also won the Coolangatta Gold ironwoman three times.

But the drama was sparked when an unknown party posted a sign at the Currumbin Alley stairs in Wallace Nicoll Park.

“Notice to people intending to use these steps for exercise – HAYLEY BATEUP OWNS THEM,” the sign reads.

“Please limit your use of said steps to times when Mr (sic) Bateup is not there. Narcissistic traits will become evident with noncompliance.”

The public stairs are used by hundreds of people per day and sparked backlash from the community.

Local David Simons wrote on a post on the Currumbin community Facebook page: “The thing is that Hayley has been training those stairs for 30 years.

“The blow-in trainers are the problem, taking over the (picnic) shelters. Hayley is a local hero who provides a much wanted service.”

Bateup, who also works as a firefighter, laughed off the situation and said she rarely even uses the stairs.

“So funny, I hardly even use the stairs,” she responded. “We actually pay the council to train there but always consider the public. I actually find this really funny as I wasn’t even there (when the sign was erected). Would be nice if they came to me about this.”
