Board senseless: the moment the whole world literally turned upside down for surfer Justen Allport
VIDEO: Justen Allport can laugh about the gnarly waves that knocked the big-wave surfer for six after escaping his horror wipeout with a “couple” of stitches.
A DAY later, Justen Allport can laugh about the unprecedented waves that knocked the big-wave surfer for six, with just a sore shoulder and some stitches to show for this spectacular wipeout at the Red Bull Cape Fear event.
In the jaw-dropping waves battering the Sydney coastline, organisers dubbed it the biggest break ever surfed at Cape Solander on the edge of Botany Bay.
Allport wouldn’t disagree, after hitting his head on the reef and spending a few hours in hospital before returning on Tuesday to watch the event wind up. Even a surfer with his experience is well aware of the risks.
“Man, I get nervous with waves a quarter of that size, I’m only human,” Allport said. “For a second (after getting dumped) I wasn’t too concerned but then I hit my head and it felt like I’d hurt my back.
“I was under the water for a long time. And when I tried to open my eyes I couldn’t see where I was in the water, or what side of the reef I was on.
“I was worried that I might get wiped out by another wave and then I wouldn’t know where it would take me.”
Luckily for Allport, close by was fellow big-waver Ryan Hipwood, who leapt from his jetski immediately.
“Ryan ended up coming second in the whole competition but he was there in a flash and helped me until the safety team could get out there and take over,” Allport said.
“Now I’m just a bit sore, hopefully if it settles down I can get back out there in 10 days or so.
“I was more frustrated than anything because if I’d not been injured I’d have been in the final. Now I just want to get back in the saddle.”
