The Matildas have climbed to a best-ever FIFA world ranking of No. 5 thanks to their recent successful Olympic qualification.

Australia’s women’s soccer team were impressive earlier this month in their Asian Olympic qualifying group, topping the standings following wins against Japan, Vietnam, South Korea and North Korea as well as a draw with China.

As a result, the Matildas moved up four spots from No. 9 in the latest rankings released on Friday, sitting behind world champions the United States, Germany, France and England.

Australia are now Asia’s best-ranked team, with Japan dropping to No. 7 after they failed to seal Olympic qualification.

China have climbed five places to 12th, which is their best ranking since May 2010.
