Kiwi golfer shoots 10-under 62 to grab a share of the lead at the Queensland PGA
New Zealand golfer Nick Voke set a new course record on his way to claiming a share of the Queensland PGA lead after two rounds.
New Zealand’s Nick Voke stormed into Queensland PGA contention on Friday with a course record of 10-under 62 at Nudgee Golf Club to share the tournament lead after two rounds.
After a disappointed one-over 73 on Thursday, Voke tore Nudgee apart in a bogey-free second round that included eight birdies and an eagle on the 525m par-five fourth hole.
His nine-under score after two rounds has him on top of the leaderboard in the PGA Tour of Australasia event alongside Victoria’s Andrew Kelly, who shot 66 on Friday after first-round 69.
“I like the golf course,” said the 29-year-old Voke, who broke the previous course record by three shots.
“It requires some patience and you’ve got to hit your mid-irons quite well so it suits my game.
“We’re going to be under the gun again this weekend so we’ll see how we go.”
Kelly described Voke’s Friday round as “pretty ridiculous”.
“There are some low scores out there,” Kelly said.
A shot behind Voke and Kelly at eight-under is the Gold Coast’s Michael Varley, whose second round of 64 would also have broken the previous course record.
“This is probably my career best, to be perfectly honest,” Varley said.
Wet conditions in the afternoon resulted in the cut moving out to one-over
However, it didn’t help two-time PGA Tour winner John Senden, who missed the cut with a two-round total of six-over, 150 following rounds of 74 and 76.
