Joaquin Niemann won the LIV Adelaide event with a Sunday round of seven-under,15 months after winning the Australian Open
After he and his teammates ordered mullets for good luck Joaquin Niemann won in Australia for the second time in just over a year.
To win in Australia it helps to have won in Australia and a couple of national Open champs did a Sunday dance in Adelaide before Joaquin Niemann holed a clutch-final hole birdie to jump to the top of the LIV podium.
It was the Chilean’s second win on Australian soil in 15 months, having captured the 2023 Australian Open, and just two months after Niemann finished top-five at a soggy Kingston Heath with conditions in Adelaide more like he would have expected.
It was his sixth event in Australia since April 2023, having also played in a PGA in Brisbane seeking world rankings points to get him the major exemptions which are being offered more now to LIV players than ever before, albeit in small numbers.
Niemann has a spot in this year’s Masters, after also playing in 2024 courtesy of his Australian Open win, and with victories mounting wants to step up in a major.
“Obviously that’s something that we all work for. It’s something that I know I can do it, it’s just a matter of that week being my week,” he said after his three-shot win.
“I just need to be patient. It’s something over the back of my mind, having a good finish in the majors. Yeah, I’m ready for it.”
Niemann blasted the equal-best Sunday round of seven-under 65 to take down Abraham Ancer, the 2018 Australian Open winner who faltered late.
The Mexican had gone 31 holes without a bogey before making three in his final five holes to surrender what had been a two-shot lead early in the final round.
Ancer’s effort were enough, however, to help his team, Fireballs GC, secure a six-shot win, a long way from the dramatic playoff finish in 2024.

Niemann declared “I love it” when asked about his connection to Australia.
He and his Torque teammates all dipped their toes in the local cultural waters this week too, asking the in-house LIV barber to give them the best mullets they could muster, while also growing out moustaches to try and match local hero Cam Smith.
“I think me and Carlos (Ortiz) doesn’t have the mustache, but we’ve got the mullet,” he said.
“But yeah, it’s something that we might keep doing every year.”
Niemann said there was so much about Australian golf which helped him produce his best, including the crowds, which hit 34,000 in Adelaide on Sunday, a new record.
“I feel like one of them is definitely the crowd. The Australian crowd is really good. They kind of like me a little bit, I think, and you can feel the energy,” he said.

“There’s a few guys following around, really energised, enjoying my shots, enjoying when I was making a putt. So that gets me going also to me. So I think that’s one of the reasons.
“Also the courses here are always in great condition. The turf is a little bit firmer. I think I like that, then I see the ball rolling a lot on the fairways and on the greens. I feel like my game is good, and if it’s good on these courses, then I love the crowd here.”
Despite having played the past two Australian Opens, Niemann couldn’t commit to a return in 2025.
