CRITICS of Luke Donald say he needs to break his major duck to cement his status as the world's No. 1 golfer.
But after reclaiming the ranking top spot with a four-shot victory at Wentworth, Donald said he was confident of doing that and more.
Donald finds himself at the head of a leading band of major-less Englishmen, including Lee Westwood and Justin Rose, who have been criticised for failing to bring their consistent elite performances to the sport's biggest stage.
Donald climbed back ahead of Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy in the rankings, courtesy of Sunday's clear win at the BMW PGA Championship, and immediately targeted the major trophy haul.
His next opportunity to end the chase will come at the Olympic Club in San Francisco in little more than two weeks.
Donald said he will arrive at the tournament in a positive mood.
"There are three majors left, and that is the next goal, to try and get one of those," he told reporters. "The big thing is that every time you have the opportunity to close out events, you gain confidence, and hopefully that will serve me well."
He added, "Winning one major would satisfy some of my critics, but the goal is to win more than one. I feel like I have that ability."
