Co-sanctioned Australian WPGA Championship to be played on Gold Coast next year
A key event on the Australian golf calendar will return next year on the Gold Coast.
The Australian WPGA Championship will return next year as part of a “festival” of golf on the Gold Coast.
Having debuted in 2022 when Su Oh won at Royal Queensland, the WPGA’s second edition will be played at Sanctuary Cove’s Palms layout on March 6-9, with the winner to again lift the Karrie Webb Cup.
A strong field of worldwide players is expected, with the event part of a three successive tournaments in Australia to be co-sanctioned by the WPGA Tour of Australasia and the Ladies European Tour.
The event will be the headline act of the Gold Coast Festival of Golf, which organisers have described as the “ultimate celebration of golf” at the Sanctuary Cove resort.
“The WPGA Tour of Australasia has a long history in Queensland, and particularly the Gold Coast, and we are excited to be a part of what is far more than a golf tournament, with the Gold Coast Festival of Golf to be a highlight on the Australian golf calendar,” WPGA Tour of Australasia chief executive officer Karen Lunn said.
PGA of Australia chief executive officer Gavin Kirkman said the return of the WPGA and the festival was a “tremendous development” for the growth of women’s professional golf.
Ladies European Tour chief executive Alexandra Armas was pleased with the addition of the WPGA to the LET schedule.
“The players will be competing to lift the Karrie Webb Cup and it’s great that Karrie – a 15-time winner on the LET – will be involved in the tournament,” Armas said.
“I’d like to thank the WPGA Tour of Australasia for all of their hard work and commitment to the women’s game in Australia and we are looking forward to returning to Australia in 2025.”
Seven-time major winner Webb, 49, is yet to commit to playing in the tournament.
