Cam Davis plays his way into elite 50-man field for BMW Championship

As Cam Smith powered his way to a monstrous LIV win, another Aussie Cam made a career-making move of his own on the PGA Tour.

Rising star Cam Davis says he’s turned an “up and down” year into a positive one after powering his way into the second week of the FedEx Cup playoffs with a third straight top-10 finish on the PGA Tour.

Davis needed to play some clutch golf in his closing holes at the St Jude Championship to stay inside the 50-player bubble to make the elite field in next week’s $30m BMW Championship and join fellow Aussie Jason Day.

The 28-year-old from Sydney, who started the event in 62nd spot on the FedEx Cup rankings, made a crucial save from the bunker on his second last hole and a par on the last to finish in a tie for sixth and move to 45th, just inside the top 50.

By finishing strongly, Davis not only kept his 2023 season alive but also secured passage to the eight “signature” events in 2024 that will have limited fields and increased prize money.

“I would say the last three Sundays in a row have all been about the same level of stress and the same level of achievement for me,” Davis said after a closing round of 3-under 67 left him four shots behind tournament winner Lucas Glover, who won for a second straight week after Patrick Cantlay found the water off the tee in the first hole of their two-man playoff.

“I’ve managed to put really good clean rounds together when the pressure has been on to keep moving forward, and it’s really satisfying to be able to know that I’ve got a tee time next week, so I can start looking forward to that.

“I’ve turned a really kind of up-and-down year into a pretty positive year just out of three really good weeks in a row.

“I don‘t know if it looked like it, but yeah, I was stressed.

“Hopefully, I can turn it into my best year yet if I have another good week next week.”

Davis, who made his first Presidents Cup team in 2022, started his charge to the playoffs finishing in a tie for 10th at the 3M Open, confirmed it with a tie for seventh at the Wyndham Championship and kept it going with his finish in Memphis.

His performances have also secured more than $1m in prize money for his three weeks of work so far and lifted his season earnings beyond $5m.

Day, who was already guaranteed a spot in the second week of the playoffs, finished way down the leaderboard in a tie for 52nd.

The Aussie success also continued with Gabi Ruffels securing her promotion to the LPGA Tour with a third win for the year on the secondary Epson Tour in the US.

Ruffels, who forgot to enter LPGA Q-School earlier this season, won the Four Winds Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, by four shots.
