Adam Scott to miss PGA Tour playoffs for first time since 2007

Just two Australians have made it to the lucrative PGA Tour playoffs after a last-ditch bid from one fell agonisingly short.

Adam Scott says missing the lucrative PGA Tour playoffs for the first time could be a “good thing” and he’d now shine the mirror on his own game after his season was brought to a premature close for the first time since 2007.

The Aussie veteran fired a sizzling final round seven-under 63 at the Wyndham Championship that at times had him inside the top-70 on the FedEx Cup rankings during a rollercoaster Sunday in the final qualifying event of the season.

Having started the day early, Scott’s name began to drop on the list as other players posted scores and when play was stopped due to poor weather, he was 72nd on the rolling rankings, prolonging his agony.

But when played resumed things didn’t improve for Scott and he dropped from a tie for sixth to a tie for seventh, with fellow Aussie Cam Davis, as Lucas Glover won the tournament, and Scott’s 15-year streak of making the playoffs was over.

Scott was one of one two players to feature in every edition of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the other being Matt Kuchar, who finished 61st on the ranking this year, but was circumspect about his run ending.

“I think I‘m actually getting to the point where I’ve got to put that stuff aside and not play to keep a streak of playing playoffs going but play to win stuff, not just be there to make the numbers up,” Scott said after his final round.

“So if it does end, I think it’s a good thing. I think it gives me a good chance to have a look at what I need to do differently to be more competitive in whatever competition I’m playing in.”

While Scott was left to rue his 15-year playoffs streak coming to an end, there will still be two Australians at next week’s St Jude Championship, the first of four FedEx Cup results.

Comeback kid Jason Day had already qualified, having returned to the winner’s list in 2023, and Davis played his way into the field with a closing 66 of his own at the Wyndham Championship.

“I was hoping to get as far up there as I could after last week and when I saw it just edged over the line, I thought, well, I don‘t know what number I need to finish this week, but I want to just try and win the tournament and get as high up as I can, then find out at the end,” said Davis, who came in at 62nd on the rankings.

“So I didn’t look at the leaderboard all week, I didn’t know where I stood projection-wise, I just wanted to finish off the tournament and I knew where I finished today should be plenty.

“So time to book a flight, book a hotel and look forward to next week.”
