Adam Scott moves into automatic selection spot for Presidents Cup

Strong performances in back-to-back tournaments has raised hopes that a star Australian golfer will play in the Presidents Cup for an 11th time.

Australian star Adam Scott’s goal of making the International team for this year’s Presidents Cup is on target after he jumped into an automatic qualifying spot on the back of impressive form in the past two weeks.

Scott has moved up to No.35 in the world gold rankings after finishing runner-up in the Scottish Open and in a tie for 10th at The Open Championship.

He is also now the sixth highest in the rankings of the players eligible to represent the Internationals against the US in September at the Royal Montreal Golf Club.

The top six ranked eligible International players at the completion of next month’s BMW Championship will gain automatic qualifying berths.

The current top six, in order of world rankings, are Hideki Matsuyama (15), Sungjae Im (18), Tom Kim (20), Jason Day (31), Byeong Hun An (32) and Scott (35).

“I think I’m in a good spot to play my way on to that team now,” Scott said of his hopes of representing the Internationals for an 11th time.

“That’s kind of the goal through the FedExCup.”

Perth’s Min Woo Lee’s fall to 36 in the world rankings has resulted in him dropping out of the top six.

Apart from the six automatic qualifiers, Internationals captain Mike Weir will also choose six other players to complete the 12-man team.

Of the players eligible to represent the US, the top six in the world rankings are Scottie Scheffler (1), Xander Schauffele (2), Wyndham Clark (5), Collin Morikawa (6), Patrick Cantlay (8) and Sahith Theegala (11).

Schauffele won The Open at Royal Troon on Monday morning (AEST) to clinch his second major of the year after also winning the PGA Championship in May.

USA captain Jim Furyk will also choose six more players to add to the six automatic selections.
