Tim Cahill says Socceroos can create one of biggest moments in Aussie sports history at World Cup
TIM Cahill says the overhauled and youthful Socceroos can create one of the biggest moments in Australian sports history in Brazil.
RECORD goalscorer Tim Cahill has declared the overhauled and youthful Socceroos can create one of the biggest moments in Australian sports history next month.
The Socceroos are paying $6.50 to advance from Group B where they face the world’s no.1 ranked team Spain, fellow 2010 finalists the Netherlands and South American giant-killers Chile (ranked no.13).
Rated a $67 chance to win the World Cup by TAB, Australia (ranked 59) are $7 outsiders to beat Chile in their opening match in Cuiaba on June 13.
Cahill is one of few veterans to have survived Ange Postecoglou’s cull, but he said the players were focused on creating an upset in Brazil.
“I think one of the biggest moments in Australian sports history could be created if we can do something special,’’ Cahill said.
“So we need to go into this World Cup with the belief that there is going to be an upset.
“If we can get that result, it will change the face of Australian football for a long time.
“Everyone says you’re so lucky you’re going to Brazil, but we’re not going there to have fun, we’re not going to see Brazil, we’re not going to leave our hotelrooms.
“We didn’t see any of Germany. We were lucky to see a bit of South Africa, but this World Cup I’ll be happy to see nothing,
“I want to see the stadiums of our first three games and get any sort of points to hopefully create something special for Australia.’’
Cahill, 34, is set to feature in his third and final World Cup.
The attacker is excited about the future even if he won’t be around for Russia.
“2018? No chance. I’m not Robocop,’’ he said.
“I definitely know there’s going to be something special in this World Cup, with the teams we’re playing and the upsets we can create and the foundations we can lay for the next boys coming through.
“I don’t want to go out there and say we’re going to get through our group and win every game, that would be ludicrous.
“But I just ask the fans to stand by us and believe in us and the young kids because we’re flying the flag for our country and waiting for the next biggest moment in Australian football.’’
Cahill managed not only to return for MLS outfit New York Red Bulls after from a hamstring strain, but scored with a trademark header in his final game (May 11) before he was released for World Cup duty.
Having made seven appearances the season started in March, Cahill’s primed.
“I feel like I’ll be peaking at the right time with the amount of games I’ve played and also the training under my belt in the camp,’’ Cahill said.
But tickets to the Socceroos’ farewell friendly against South Africa on May 26 here.
