West Ham fights back from a goal down to beat Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham’s poor run has continued with a home loss to West Ham.
An unhappy Ange Postecoglou slammed suggestions his Tottenham side isn’t being rewarded for “good football” after Spurs suffered a fourth defeat in five Premier League matches.
Despite again taking an early lead, Postecoglou’s men were beaten 2-1 by London rivals West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday morning (AEDT).
“Not good enough,” former Socceroos coach Postecoglou told SpursPlay.
“It was another game where we certainly had enough dominance to win it, and again another game where we didn’t show the conviction we needed in both boxes, and we didn’t get the outcome we wanted.”
For the fifth time in five games, Tottenham went ahead in the first half, this time through returning Argentine defender Cristian Romero, who headed home an 11th-minute corner from Pedro Porro.
However, Spurs again paid the price for not making more of its dominance in possession.
West Ham weathered the Spurs storm and equalised in the 52nd minute through Jarrod Bowen, who pounced on a loose ball in Tottenham’s penalty area after a botched attempted clearance.
The Hamners went ahead in the 74th minute through midfielder James Ward-Prowse after a sloppy back pass from Spurs defender Destiny Udogie wasn’t properly dealt with by exposed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
“We weren’t good. We’ve got to get away from that. That’s part of the problem,” an annoyed Postecoglou said.
“Everyone’s saying we’re playing good football. Good football means you win games.
“I’m not here to play good football, I’m here to win.
“That’s been the clear message from day one to the players, that we play this style of football not to get pats on the back, we play this style of football to win games and bring success to this football club.
“You need to embrace that. It’s not easy. I’m not saying it’s easy, but that’s where we need to be.
“The goals we conceded today were very poor from us, so there’s stuff we need to work on there, but at the same time ... there’s no point in saying we missed a whole lot of chances and we’re unlucky.
“If you’re missing chances there’s stuff that we need to work on there.
“We turned down some opportunities to take that responsibility to be ruthless in those areas. For this group of players, and for me, the whole group, that’s where our growth needs to come from.”
Spurs’ loss keeps them in fifth place, nine points behind leaders Arsenal.
Tottenham’s next match is on Monday morning (AEDT), again at home, against seventh-placed Newcastle, who were surprise 3-0 losers to Everton on Friday morning.
“We’ve got to ... dust ourselves off. (There’s) no point in feeling sorry for ourselves,” Postecoglou said.
“(We need to) come out on Monday and put on a performance .that shows that we want to win games of football.”
