Mark Bosnich and John Aloisi join Fox Sports News to analyse the Socceroos’ World Cup squad

MARK Bosnich is surprised Sasa Ognenovski wasn’t included, while John Aloisi backs Ange Postecoglou’s selection of 10 A-League players.

Ange Postecoglou talks to Richard Bayliss following the announcement of the Socceroos squad, with the manager stressing that his national team environment will be new for young and old.

THE verdict is in from Ange Postecoglou and 30 Australians now have the chance to fight for 23 World Cup places up for grabs.

Socceroos legends Mark Bosnich and John Aloisi joined Fox Sports News on Wednesday to dissect the selections.

PICK YOUR SOCCEROOS XI

COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE OF THE SOCCEROOS SQUAD

GOALKEEPERS: Ryan will be No.1, says Bosnich.

Goalkeepers: Mat Ryan (Club Brugge/Belgium), Mitchell Langerak (Borussia Dortmund/Germany), Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United), Mark Birighitti (Newcastle Jets)

“Mat Ryan has been absolutely outstanding playing for Club Brugge in Belgium, I think he will be the No.1 starter, with Mitchell Langerak not too far behind.

“Eugene Galekovic, for me, has been the most consistent goalkeeper in the A-League since I’ve been back in the country.

“Mark Birighitti is a bit of a bolter. I don’t think he’ll go but he’s there for the experience.”

DEFENDERS: Surprised by Ognenovski omission, says Bosnich.

Defenders: Josh Brilliante (Newcastle Jets), Ivan Franjic (Brisbane Roar), Jason Davidson (Heracles Almelo/Holland), Matthew Spiranovic (Western Sydney Wanderers), Curtis Good (Dundee United/Scotland), Bailey Wright (Preston North End/England), Luke Wilkshire (Dynamo Moscow/Russia), Alex Wilkinson (Jeonbuk Motors/South Korea), Ryan McGowan (Shandong Luneng/China)

“Curtis Good hasn’t played since February – that’s going to be massive … I was talking to Johnny and asked him what would be your criteria. He said: if they didn’t travel to Brazil … ready to train, then they couldn’t travel. But maybe that’s why Ange is naming the 30 now. Maybe he’s not sure about people like (Curtis).

“I’m a bit surprised (Adelaide United’s Osama Malik) and (Brisbane Roar’s) Jade North missed out on the final 30, as well as (Sydney FC’s) Sasa Ognenovski. They are three players I thought that would get in. Especially Sasa, because of his experience.

“There’s Luke Wilkshire in that defensive portion of the side, but other than that there’s not a great deal of experience in that part of the park, which is going to be important for us in these three games.”

MIDFIELDERS: we need to be able to keep the ball, says Aloisi.

Midfielders: Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace/England), Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory), James Holland (Austria Vienna/Austria), Massimo Luongo (Swindon Town/England), Adam Sarota (FC Utrecht/Holland), Oliver Bozanic (Luzern/Switzerland), Matt McKay (Brisbane Roar), Mark Bresciano (Al-Gharafa/Qatar)

“I think Ange has got his way. We saw against Costa Rica and Ecuador, he’ll play four at the back, two sitting midfielders, a No.10, two wingers and a striker.

“His main message to the players is to keep the ball and they need to be able to keep the ball … because (our Group B rivals) are that good on the ball if we don’t have it we’ll be chasing the game the whole time. And we don’t have players – I don’t think – to be chasing and defending the whole time.”

On Swindon Town midfielder Luongo: “He’s been brilliant this year – and he’s Ange’s type of player. Technically very gifted, left and right foot, he can score goals as well, but he’s more probably a defensive midfielder, but he can start the play … I think he’ll be one Ange will be looking closely to take to Brazil … he could be one of those two sitting midfielders.”

On Milligan: “Mark Milligan came with us in 2006 – but it was more for experience for the future. It’s paid off, because he’s going to be one of our main players.”

ATTACK: Timmy or Josh to start up front, says Aloisi.

Attackers: Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls/USA), Josh Kennedy (Nagoya Grampus/Japan), Tom Rogic (Melbourne Victory), Dario Vidosic (Sion/Switzerland), Tommy Oar (FC Utrecht/Holland), James Troisi (Melbourne Victory), Ben Halloran (Fortuna Dusseldorf/Germany), Adam Taggart (Newcastle Jets), Mathew Leckie (FSV Frankfurt/Germany)

“We know what Mark Bresciano is going to bring to the table, what Timmy is going to bring.

“Josh (Kennedy is always dangerous). I think it will be either of those two who start, Timmy or Josh up front.”

A-LEAGUE INFLUENCE: Ange is confident in his selections, says Aloisi

“The players that Ange has picked … he’s picked technical players. (Josh) Brilliante is good on the ball, plus he’s got the fitness and the legs. Whether he takes him, I’m not sure, but the other players – there’s 22 that started their career in the A-League.

“Ange knows the A-League back to front. He’s confident with the players he’s selected, with the style of football he wants to play.

“It’s great for the A-League and it’s great for those players to get the experience.”
