Australia is heading to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after besting Peru in 5-4 in wild scenes in Doha early on Tuesday morning.

The Socceroos trailed early in the penalty shootout when Martin Boyle’s first shot was saved. However, Aaron Mooy, Craig Goodwin, Ajdin Hjrustic, Jamie Maclaren and Awer Mabil all converted from the spot.

Goalkeeper Andy Redmayne was the fairytale hero at the end as he made two saves to send Australia to the World Cup.

But online viewers missed a crucial moment late in the shootout due to a technical glitch at the worst possible time.

With Australia up 4-3, fans held their breath as Peru’s Edison Flores went to take his shot, needing to score to keep the South Americans alive.

But as he approached the ball the screen froze for several seconds and didn’t resume until after his shot hit the back of the net.

“Imagine Peru missed that 5th pen and we all missed it cos the stream froze for everyone #AUSvsPER,” one viewer wrote on Twitter.

“Argh!! My stream just froze for that last penalty!!!” another said.

“MY STREAM FROZE BEFORE THE PEN WTF CHANNEL 10,” a third wrote.

“What a time for the stream to freeze! Anyone else? #AUSvsPER” a fourth added.

A Network Ten spokeswoman said, “During the penalty shoot-out this morning in the Socceroos vs Peru match, there was an unfortunate glitch via the live satellite feed from Doha from our third-party provider. This was beyond our control, but we sincerely apologise for the disruption. A massive congratulations to the Socceroos on making the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.”

The stream resumed with Flores celebrating a goal as the commentators appeared to suggest Redmayne had managed to get a hand on the shot.

The shootout then went to its decisive sixth round – and the rest was history.

Socceroos players went bananas as they rushed to celebrate with Redmayne after the save — and there were tears of joy seen on sections of the team.

Redmayne’s moment will go down in Australian sporting history — and so will coach Graham Arnold’s bombshell decision to roll the dice in the final minute of extra time to sub him on for captain Mat Ryan.

“There was so much pressure on the coach,” Socceroos great Andy Harper said.

“Questions of the coach. A queue of people waiting to take a baseball bat to the coach. And Redmayne saves the team, the campaign and now Australia is off to a fifth consecutive World Cup.”

Australia can now turn its attention to the Qatar World Cup in 2022, beginning November 21, where they will be in Group D against France, Denmark and Tunisia.
