Socceroos pumped for historic first clash with England at sold out Wembley

A Socceroos star has only ever been to Wembley on a tour, increasing the buzz for Australia’s historic clash with England this weekend in front of a sellout crowd.

Socceroos defender Harry Souttar is “buzzing” ahead of Australia’s battle with England at Wembley, where he’s only ever been as a tourist, with up to 90,000 fans set to pack the iconic venue after the friendly was declared a sellout.

Souttar, 24, was already on a high before joining the squad after making his first appearance of the English Championship season for Leicester City having been on the selection outer with coach Enzo Maresca amid talk he would leave the Foxes in the recent transfer window

However, a rumoured move to Scottish club Rangers didn’t eventuate, meaning he will remain at Leicester at least until the next transfer window in January.

With World Cup qualifiers to play next month, as well as the January-February Asian Cup on the horizon, Souttar cannot afford to be inactive at club level.

But there seems to be some light at the end of tunnel, with Souttar having made two appearances for Leicester in all competitions in the past fortnight.

The first came in the League Cup late last month when he started in Leicester’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool.

And in a better sign of Souttar being a greater part of Maresca’s selection plans going forward, he was a starter in Leicester’s 2-0 English Championship weekend win over his former club Stoke City.

“I was absolutely buzzing to be back in,” Souttar said.

“I played the Cup game a couple of weeks ago but that was my first league start of the season … I’m just absolutely over the moon.

“I didn’t really know too much about it, then I got told the team and I was in, and I was just so delighted to be out there with the boys again.

“We’ve had a really good start to the season and another win on the weekend, which puts us into a really good position going into this (international) break, and hopefully we can continue that for the season.”

Souttar’s focus now switches to the Socceroos’ visit to the “iconic” Wembley on Saturday morning where he and Australia will be playing for the first time.

The Australians are set to draw on the spirit of the 2003 team which took down a star-studded English outfit with the stands set to be packed as a ong sporting rivalry continues.

“I‘ve only really been (to Wembley) before on a tour with my granny, when I was way younger,” Souttar said. s

“But watching on TV, FA Cup finals, play-off games - it‘s going to be a special night for all of us.

“(But) as good as England are, and the iconic venue, ultimately it‘s a game of football.

“With the experiences we‘ve had with the World Cup (and) playing massive teams all over the world ... it’s one that we go into with excitement, knowing that we can play on the biggest stage against the best players.”

“We’ve got full belief in ourselves in what we can do as a group. Hopefully, it’ll be a good night for us.”

Belgium-based midfielder Aiden O’Neill has been called into Australia’s squad as a replacement for Middlesbrough’s Riley McGree, who has been ruled out with a foot injury.
