Socceroo Jordan Bos’ European move confirmed by Melbourne City
Melbourne City’s Jordan Bos is moving to Belgium in a deal reportedly worth close to $2 million, a record for an A-League player sold to an overseas club.
Socceroo Jordan Bos’ record-breaking move to Belgium has been confirmed by Melbourne City.
The 20-year-old left-back will join KVC Westerlo on a deal worth close to $2 million.
It breaks the record for the sale of an A-League player, which currently stands at $1.4 million, which English Premier League giants Manchester City paid Melbourne City in 2016 for the services of another Socceroo, Aaron Mooy.
Westerlo finished seventh is this season’s Belgian Pro League and are currently contesting playoffs.
Bos has made 50 appearances in all competitions for Melbourne City and debuted for the Socceroos in March against Ecuador.
National coach Graham Arnold recently compared Bos to Socceroos great Scott Chipperfield.
“He’s a left full back who can get high, get forward and get some good crosses in the box,” Arnold said.
“He’s physically a good specimen for what we need. I don’t think I’ve seen one like this one since Scott Chipperfield. I hate to put a name on it, but he’s a very, very similar player to Scotty.”
Socceroos great Robbie Slater, who is among a host of Australian players to have cut their teeth in European football with a stint in Belgium, said Bos would benefit from such a move.
“The Belgian league is a great league for Jordan to prove himself,” Slater said.
“It’s a good chance for him to take the first step in his dream of playing regular football in Europe.
“Of course there is a risk that it doesn’t work out and he ends up back in Australia, but he has shown his quality and you can’t blame him for wanting to pursue his dream.”
Melbourne City director of football Michael Petrillo said Bos, a product of the club’s youth academy, had “natural abilities” that were “evident from the outset”.
“It has been a privilege to see him grow into the elite player he is today,” Petrillo said.
“We are incredibly proud of Jordan and his achievements at the club.
“His development as a player and as a person is testament to the quality of our academy program and we are excited to see him take on his next challenge.”
