ESPN analyst and ex-Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop collapsed live on air on Sunday (Monday AEST) in a scary moment ahead of a pre-season clash in the United States.

Speaking live on air to preview the match between football giants AC Milan and Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, Hislop had a slight smile on his face as he began to wobble before collapsing forward towards his long-time ESPN colleague Dan Thomas.

Thomas is seen very swiftly calling for help in a frightening moment caught on live television.

Naturally there was immediate concern for Hislop, a 54-year-old who represented both England and Trinidad and Tobago at international level in his long career with the gloves.

During the halftime break, a flustered but relieved looking Thomas came back on air to allay any fears and state an “embarrassed” Hislop was recovering.

“Halftime then here at the Rose Bowl, it’s AC Milan 2, Real Madrid nil. But that of course very much secondary to what happened ahead of the game,” Thomas said.

“Obviously my mate Shaka’s not here, but as it stands it’s good news.

“He’s conscious, he’s talking, I think he’s a little embarrassed about it all, he’s apologised profusely. Not a man who likes people to make a fuss of him.

“Obviously far too early to make any sort of diagnosis, but the important thing is that Shaka’s conscious and we spoke to his family as well.

“We spoke to his wife and things are looking OK. Silly Shaka. Thank you for all your love and as it stands, it looks like he’ll be all right.”

Hislop began his career with Reading in England’s third tier, making his debut in the 1992-93 season.

After three seasons with the Royals, Hislop was signed by Premier League outfit Newcastle United and would also spend time with West Ham and Portsmouth in his top-flight career.

He was also a key member of the Trinidad and Tobago side that qualified for the World Cup for the first and only time in 2006.

Hislop retired after a final season with FC Dallas in the United States in 2007 before moving into the media the following year.

He has since become a beloved member of the ESPN FC football commentary team.
