Sam Kerr has broken her silence after her grandmother was struck by a car metres from her home in Perth’s southeast on Friday.

The Matildas superstar returned home to Western Australia after being informed of the incident while attending the wedding of her international teammate, Emily van Egmond, in NSW’s Hunter Valley.

Kerr’s grandmother, Coral, was hit by a car at around 10.45am local time on Friday, near her home in the Perth suburb of Palmyra.

Witnesses say a ute was trying to overtake a bus at the intersection of Marmion Street and Justinian Street when it mounted the footpath, knocking into a power pole and allegedly hitting Coral as she hopped off the bus.

The 89-year-old was rushed to the Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition where she underwent surgery for a broken femur, ankle and hip.

A Royal Perth Hospital spokesman said following her surgery she is in a stable condition.

But even still, the Matildas forward was in no mood to address the situation upon returning home on the weekend, telling reporters: “Just some privacy would be great” as she hopped off the plane at Perth Airport.

Instead, the 31-year-old took to Instagram to thank her fans for their support and well wishes, posting a short and sweet message on her Instagram story: “Thank you for all the messages, love, and prayers for my nan x.”

Kerr’s father, Roger, was slightly more forthcoming with reporters at the airport, revealing his daughter was shaken up by the incident.

“She’s a bit shocked,” Roger told reporters about his daughter Sam. “She’s gone straight there to see her grandmother now and we’ll follow.”

Kerr’s grandmother Coral moved from India to Australia with her husband more than 50 years ago and has previously spoken about her close bond with the Matildas ace.

“Nearly every week, she sends me a message, I phone her. I FaceTime with her,” the 89-year-old previously said about Kerr.

“Whenever she comes home, she’s always here having breakfast. Her favourite breakfast is a pirrata, which is an Indian bread with jam.

“Or we go out for a coffee or lunch. She never fails to come and see me and take me out.”

If the shock of the incident wasn’t enough, the Kerr family also have to come to terms with the tragic coincidence that the spot Coral was struck is the same intersection where her husband Denzil Kerr was killed after being hit by a car some 20 years ago.

A 63-year-old man has been charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
