‘Nazi salute’ leads to Western Sydney Wanderers supporter being banned from matches for two years

A criminal investigation has been launched after a Western Wanderers supporter was hit with a two-year ban for using a ‘Nazi salute’ during an A-League game.

A Western Sydney Wanderers supporter has been banned from matches for two years for making a “Nazi salute’’ at an A-League game.

The man, a member of Western Sydney’s active supporter group Red and Black Bloc, made the salute, among other “offensive gestures”, during the Wanderers match against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on April 13.

Having identified the offending fan, Football Australia has banned him for two years from A-League, Australia Cup and National Premier League games, national team matches, and games in the national second-tier competition set to start next year.

“As the governing body of football in Australia, we hold a firm stance against any form of racist and/or anti-social behaviour,” an FA spokesman said.

“The actions of this individual not only breached the A-League terms of admission and our spectator code of behaviour but fundamentally contradicted the values of respect and inclusivity that Football Australia stands for.

“We are committed to ensuring that football remains a sport that unites communities and offers a safe and respectful environment for all.”

NSW Police have also started a criminal investigation into the matter.

The FA spokesman said the banned spectator had been notified of the sanction and had been “given the opportunity to present any additional material for Football Australia’s review of the ban”.
