Matildas star Ellie Carpenter has hailed the playing kits Australia will wear at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, saying they are a “true representation” of the squad.

Released on Tuesday, the patterns and green and gold colours of the Matildas’ home kit – which also includes white socks – celebrate a “diverse country and community”.

“They really represent us, what our beliefs are and what we think is important; they put that into the process of designing the kit,” Carpenter said.

“We’re really grateful that they’ve listened to us and given us a voice to show what is important and what we believe in.

“I’m very grateful to be wearing this kit in this upcoming tournament. To pull on that green and gold jersey for Australia, it’s very exciting and an honour I’ll never take for granted.”

The away strip, which kit manufacturers Nike says represents a “nation that is vibrant, energetic and forward-thinking” is mainly aqua, but has a blue side panel and pale yellow piping.

Football Australia chief executive officer James Johnson says “the kit designed for the Matildas represents our diverse and beautiful game and the country that we call home”.

“In 2023, we will experience a special moment as we welcome people from all over the world to our backyard to celebrate a monumental event in sport that leaves a transformative legacy for football in this country and Australian society.

“This occasion is generations in the making and since winning the bid, Football Australia has been committed to ensuring the Matildas would become the global iconic brand they are today.

“To see the kits on the pitch is going to be such a special and unifying moment for everyone involved in the game – from the pioneers of the past, the players of today, the staff, the fans, and future generations of Australians.”

The Matildas’ World Cup preparations continue on Friday night (AEST) against Scotland at Cherry Red Records Stadium in London.
