Matildas coach torched by Canadian player in X-rated spray caught on TV

Tony Gustavsson was on the receiving end of a filthy spray from a rival player in a heated exchange caught by TV microphones.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson was on the receiving end of an X-rated spray while standing on the sidelines during Australia’s momentous thumping of Canada.

Angry Canadian defender Allysha Chapman turned on the coach with a profanity-laced outburst after appearing to take issue with something that was said from the direction where the coach was standing.

Gustavsson, from Sweden, was visibly upset with Chapman’s rough play, specifically with the moment where she was seen crashing into Australian forward Hayley Raso as they competed for the ball.

The contact left Raso looking distressed on the ground and requiring medical attention.

Chapman’s blow-up was caught by the broadcast microphones and it went around the world on live TV.

“She f***ing jumped into me you tw*t!” Chapman yelled.

Channel 7’s David Basheer said in commentary: “Allysha Chapman looked over to Tony Gustavsson and said some pretty stern words.

“It was just a coming together, really. It wasn’t Chapman’s doing. It was just Raso’s determination to win the ball.”

Matildas star Grace Gill described it as “a coming together,” with “Raso coming off a little worse for wear.”

As reported by The New York Post, the foul-mouthed incident also forced the BBC’s Robyn Cowen to acknowledge Chapman’s exchange.

“Apologies, there, if any language was picked up on the very sensitive pitch-side microphones, it seems,” she said.

Chapman’s graphic moment was likely the result of the frustration that resulted in a 4-0 loss to the Matildas.

The game was essentially all over with Australia holding a 3-0 lead at the time of the 64th minute incident

Raso had scored two first-half goals in the contest, one in the sixth minute of the match and the other in the 39th minute after a half that was somewhat overshadowed by a series of controversial VAR calls.

While Gustavsson wasn’t happy at the time Chapman’s outburst, he was beaming with pride when the final whistle was blown.

Gustavsson said he could see the Matildas’ stunning turnaround in form coming days before the 4-0 masterclass that had AAMI Park rocking.

But he said it was a pep talk from injured captain Sam Kerr to the players before the game which ensured they produced one of the most complete performances of his tenure, NCA NewsWire reports.

Under immense scrutiny during the week for his tactical decisions and belated substitutions in the 3-2 defeat to Nigeria, Gustavsson said he “never, ever doubted” his players would lift at the last moment to avoid a shattering group stage exit.

“Part of the reason they were so united and performed the way they did was what Sam said to the team,” he said.

“(She said) ‘make sure you win without me, so I can get another week to train, and recover and get healthy’.

“I never, ever doubted the players in terms of stepping up today and performing well … I knew the performance was going to be solid.”
