Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been named the England Football Writers’ Association’s female player of the year after another stellar season with Chelsea.

Kerr, 28, has scored 18 English Women’s Super League goals for a Chelsea team one point clear at the top of the ladder with one round remaining.

“I pride myself on scoring goals but I never give up,” Kerr told Sky Sports,

“I’ll always do the best and even if you’re not scoring or not having your best game as a striker, the most important thing is you’re working for the team.

“I think every year I strive to be the best player I can be and I think as I get older I appreciate it more.”

Kerr snared 40 per cent of the votes to finish ahead of nearest rivals Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal) and Lauren Hemp (Manchester City).

Liverpool attacker Mo Salah was named the men’s player of the year.

“I want to thank everyone who voted for me,” Salah said.

“Of course journalists are a big part of the football family and hopefully we can win some more (trophies) this year.”

Salah won the award with 48 per cent of the votes. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne placed second, while West Ham’s Declan Rice was third.
