Mark Milligan says James Troisi’s Brazil selection a no brainer for Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou
MARK Milligan says Victory teammate James Troisi should be “at the top of the list” of A-League players in contention for Brazil.
MARK Milligan says Melbourne Victory teammate James Troisi should be “at the top of the list” of A-League players in contention to make Australia’s World Cup squad.
Ange Postecoglou will name his preliminary 30-man squad next week before the team convenes for a week-long training camp in Gosford.
The Socceroos then play a friendly against South Africa at ANZ Stadium on May 26.
Each of Milligan, Troisi and Tom Rogic have continued to train in Melbourne since Victory’s season ended on April 27.
An added bonus is that they are being overseen by Victory’s strength and conditioning coach Pete Cklamovski, who from next week will begin his new role as the national team’s football analyst.
Milligan and Rogic are considered certainties to go to Brazil, while Troisi’s form this season has him in contention.
Milligan said he had no doubt that Troisi should be named.
“It’s been a tough couple of years for him, but since he’s been back at Victory — and especially in the back-end of the season — he’s been outstanding,” Milligan said.
“If there are going to be a handful of A-League players going, then I have no doubt that James will be at the top of that list.”
Rogic has not played since he injured his groin on April 5, but he resumed full training last week and Milligan said he was progressing well.
“The danger there was that you push him too hard to get him back for our games and then risk putting him out for even longer,” he said.
“Our medical staff have juggled that extremely well, wanting the best for the player, not just the team.
“Tommy’s still very young and it’s the sort of injury that if you do aggravate it and make it worse it’s something that can affect you for a long time.”
Milligan said all three had been involved in mini-games at Victory training “to stay sharp and focused’’.
