‘Lost too many games’: Latest blow leaves Ange Postecoglou fighting for his job

Australian football coach Ange Postecoglou has ripped into his side after another defeat put his Tottenham future in serious doubt.

Ange Postecoglou’s season continues to go from bad to worse, with Tottenham suffering yet another loss, this time to Fulham.

Postecoglou’s side went down 2-0 on Monday (AEDT), with all momentum gained from their progression to the Europa League quarter-finals in midweek gone, as they crumbled in the final stages at Craven Cottage.

Rodrigo Muniz gave Fulham the lead in the 78th before Ryan Sessegnon doubled the home team’s lead 10 minutes later sealing the game.

The latest loss was the 15th of the season in the league for Postecoglou’s men, the most at this point of a Premier League campaign for Spurs since the 1997-98 season.

Postecoglou cut a forlorn figure on the sideline as both goals were a direct result of some horrible defending, with another game slipping away from them.

Following the defeat, Premier League legend Ian Wright said the massive injury crisis and general run of lacklustre performances had taken its toll on the Aussie coach.

“When he looks back at (the goals) it could be quite embarrassing because those two goals could have easily been avoided,” Wright said on Optus Sports’ Matchday Live.

“And it’s costing Tottenham and it’s costing him, you can see the way he is in his demeanour, it’s costing him.”

And after slipping to 13th with only one win in their past five games in all competitions Postecoglou admitted it’s been a tough season where too many games have slipped through their fingers.

“It’s been a difficult campaign for sure. But I feel we’ve lost too many games that we should have got stuff out of, and this was one of those games,” Postecoglou said.

“It’s another international break we go into off a loss and you feel that. We just need to make sure we’re ready for when we come back.

“I said to the players I’m not going to allow anyone to think about Europa and nothing else.

“We can’t let this league season go the way it has. We have lost way too many games. Unacceptable.”

Postecoglou’s job has been under pressure for a while, but has constantly defended himself by citing the injuries he has had to navigate.

But it is believed if Spurs fail to win the Europa League he won’t be in charge of Tottenham come next season.

And former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara said he believes Postecoglou will be sacked immediately if they’re knocked out of the European competition.

“They’ve been inconsistent all season. Lacklustre in possession, no real edge to our game, no bite.“ O’Hara said on Sky Sports UK after the 2-0 defeat.

“Fulham are a good side, and they’re well organised, but you’ve got to take the game to them. I understand we’ve got the Europa League, and we have put all of our eggs in that basket, but the Premier League is bread and butter.

“The standard of the performances in the Premier League this season is nowhere near good enough, and I think Ange is clinging onto his job right now. We’ve got to play Frankfurt in the quarter-finals (of the Europa League) – they’re a good team, they’re fourth (in the Bundesliga) at the moment.

“That is a tough game. I think if we go out then, it’s probably ‘see you later’ to Ange Postecoglou at Spurs. I don’t see a way back. Is he getting the best out of these players now? We’re getting players back fit.”

While most Tottenham fans have already lost faith and are calling for him to be removed from his post.

“Let’s just all be honest now. Ange Postecoglou is the worst manager this football club has ever had. By a million miles,” one disgruntled fan wrote on X following the Fulham defeat.

“Sack Postecoglou tonight, been awful for months and months, this team is so poor. We are nowhere near good enough to win the Europa anyway and even if we did I still wouldn’t want him anywhere near the club next season,” another said.

“There is simply no reason for Postecoglou to remain in the employ of Tottenham Hotspur - 15 defeats in 29 games in the league,” a third added.
