Kris Commons is not a happy camper

THE world of professional sport is no stranger to the occasional tantrum, but this performance may well take the cake.

THE world of professional sport is no stranger to the occasional tantrum, but this performance may well take the cake.

Suffering a disappointing defeat in their Europa League clash against Norwegian side Molde, Celtic FC scored just one goal in the match, recorded by attacking midfielder Kris Commons.

But with 14 minutes remaining in the game and the score in Molde’s favour at 3-1, Celtic manager Ronny Deila substituted Commons from the field, allegedly to give his side a better balance in defence — an area in which the Scotland international does not excel.

Commons however took exception to being ejected from the game, and threw one of the more entertaining tantrums the game has seen. And for football, that is really saying something.

Deila spoke after the match, condeming the actions of the 32-year-old.

“That’s something we can’t have.”

“We are a team. I understand that players can be disappointed at being taken off, but to show it in that way, it’s not how we want to have it in Celtic,” Deila said.

“We are one team and it’s not about one player. It’s very disrespectful to everyone else. That’s unacceptable.

“I’ve spoken to him, of course. This is not about punishing people, it’s about understanding and about talking about how we react and how we behave.

“He was irritated he was taken off. That’s OK, sometimes you are irritated, but you do it in a better way than he did.”

The incident attracted a mixed response from Twitter users, with some even condoning the irate footballer’s actions.

Right or wrong, Commons’ performance could very well go down as one of sport’s more embarrassing on-field sulks, walking in the company of former Aussie cricket captain Ricky Ponting in the “catch collision” incident of 2011, or anything branded by infamous tennis star John McEnroe.
