Jamie Young extends his time with Melbourne City by at least another season

One of the A-League’s most experienced players has recommitted to Melbourne City for another season, but the club has parted ways with a championship-winning defender.

Veteran goalkeeper Jamie Young will extend his career by at least one more season after signing a new year-long deal with Melbourne City.

The 38-year-old title-winning gloveman made 38 appearances in all competitions for City in the club’s 2023-24 campaign after joining them in July last year from Western United.

“I’ve enjoyed playing for Melbourne City and when the club came to me about re-signing, I knew it was a good decision to make,” Young said.

“I’ve always said to myself that I wanted to play as long as I could and compete at the highest level possible, and at City, that is a reality.”

In a domestic career that started in 2014 with Brisbane Roar after he spent 12 years in the UK, Young has appeared in 260 games in all competitions for three A-League clubs.

City’s football director Michael Petrillo hailed Young’s “leadership” and “experience”.

“On the pitch, Jamie is an impressive shot-stopper and has been one of the best in the league for many years,” Petrillo said.

“Equally important though is what he offers off the pitch as well. He is someone who always drives the highest standards.

“He is a great mentor, and someone for his younger teammates to look up to.”

However, while Young is remaining at City, Portuguese defender Nuno Reis is departing the Melbourne club he joined in January 2021.

“It’s a bittersweet feeling to be leaving a club where I’ve made so many fond memories,” said Reis, who won a championship and three premierships with City.

“This has been the best squad I’ve been a part of across my career and it’s been amazing to be part of such a highly successful era.”

Meanwhile, Brisbane Roar have confirmed the signing of former US youth international defender Marcus Ferkranus.

As revealed by News Corp Australia last month, 21-year-old Ferkranus will join the Roar from Los Angeles Galaxy, where he played for Ventura County – the Galaxy’s reserves team – in the MLS Next Pro competition.

Ferkranus, who spent part of his childhood in Queensland, won’t take up a visa-player spot in Brisbane’s squad as his mother was born in Sydney.

“I’m very excited to be coming to play for the Roar and I’m ready to give everything to this club and for these fans,” Ferkranus said.

“This was the first professional club I watched live as a young kid growing up here and it means so much to me to come back here and fight for this badge.”
