Mayhem as world's worst team wins first game in 20 years

The world’s worst football team has won its first game in 20 years, prompting insane scenes on Friday morning.

San Marino, ranked dead last as the world’s No. 210 team, according to the FIFA rankings, made history by beating Liechtenstein 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League to claim their first ever competitive win.

The tiny country of barely 30,000 people, surrounded by Italy, came into the match at their San Marino Stadium looking for a first win of any sort since beating Liechtenstein in a friendly in 2004.

The country went into the contest on a winless run of 140-matches.

Liechtenstein had a goal disallowed for a tight offside in the first half before San Marino pounced on a defensive error to grab the winner in the 53rd minute through Nicko Sensoli.

Aged 19, he had not been born when the team who sit 210th and last in the world rankings last won a game.

The whipping boys of international football had been building up to this having claimed draws in friendly matches against Seychelles, Saint Lucia and Saint Kitts and Nevis over the last two years.

They are in the three-team Group 1 of the bottom tier League D in the Nations League, with Gibraltar their other opponents.

Videos from the venue captured the insane scenes as players, staff and fans went bananas at the full time whistle.

The “San Marino fan account” changed its profile to start: “IT HAPPENED.”

That was followed by joyous separate posts of: “Changed bio” and “Top of the league” - as the nation head Gibraltar and Liechtenstein after the League D Group 1 opener.

One supporter responded: “They wrote history. They will be remembered forever as legends, as the golden generation of Sammarinese football.”

Another added: “San Marino won. That’s the tweet” while a third asked: “Am I dreaming?”

Ecstatic fans were awed by the achievement, The Sun reports.

One posted: “Nicko Sensoli wasn’t even born when San Marino won their first match in 2004. Insane.”
