Former Socceroos star Mile Sterjovski has been given the task of steadying the unrest at Macarthur FC after Dwight Yorke’s swift departure from his head coaching role last weekend.

Yorke has been linked with a move to Sydney FC to replace under-pressure coach Steve Corica after the Manchester United great ended his seven month tenure as head coach in acrimonious circumstances.

The parting of ways came amid reports Yorke called his troops a “pub team” and questioned the professionalism of the A-League in a scathing assessment following last Friday’s 1-0 loss to Adelaide United.

Yorke’s assistant, Russell Latapy, also left the club, leaving Macarthur to name a third manager in the space of a year after Yorke was brought in to replace Ante Milicic.

Sterjovski, who has been Macarthur‘s academy coach and has been with the club since its birth in 2020, was unveiled as coach to the squad at Monday‘s training session.

The Bulls did not confirm the length of the deal for the 43-year-old who will take charge of his first game on Saturday afternoon against Western United at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

“Since day one with this club, I have worked with the NPL side to help the talented youngsters achieve their goal of becoming professional players,” Sterjovski said.

“The players are still my top priority in this new role and I will do everything to help them reach their potential.

“I want to build on what the club has started this season and there won‘t be any change to our objective of playing finals football.”

Sterjovski played 43 games for the Socceroos between 2000 and 2010 during a long playing career in Europe and the A-League.

After winning the Australia Cup, Macarthur have battled this A-League season, winning just five of 13 games to sit in sixth spot.
