Former EPL striker Charlie Austin could be joined at Brisbane Roar by Robbie Kruse

With ex-EPL striker Charlie Austin having been signed, Brisbane Roar now wants to bring back a Socceroos stalwart to the club.

Having secured the services of former English Premier League striker Charlie Austin, Brisbane Roar hopes to further boost its attacking stocks by signing Socceroos great Robbie Kruse.

The Roar on Monday confirmed the signing of ex-Queens Park Rangers, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion marksman Austin on a multi-year deal.

“To play abroad is something I’ve always wanted to do and when the opportunity came up to join this club I was looking to explore it,” 32-year-old Austin said.

“I want to help the club get back into the top six and on a personal note score as many goals as possible.”

Roar coach Warren Moon said a “lot of work” had gone into bringing someone of Austin’s “calibre” to Brisbane.

“Charlie has scored goals wherever he’s been,” said Moon, who met with Austin in London on his recent trip to the UK.

“From my discussion with him, he comes to us with great ambition to try to hit the 200 mark for his career.

“That says to me that we have a player who is coming here to be successful for Brisbane Roar and who has the hunger to continue doing what he loves best and that’s scoring goals.”

To aid Austin’s aim of scoring goals on a weekly basis, Moon is intent on adding further attacking weapons to his squad.

They include former Roar prodigy Kruse, who last played for Brisbane in 2009.

Capped 75 times for the Socceroos, 33-year-old Kruse parted ways with Melbourne Victory earlier this month after a season that was curtailed by a serious knee injury.

A proud Queenslander, Kruse has returned to Brisbane with his family and has had discussions with Moon about rejoining the club.

Moon remains hopeful of offloading Argentine striker Juan Lescano and German midfielder Matti Steinmann despite both having a year remaining on their Roar contracts.

Moon said the entire Roar squad was thrilled at the prospect of returning to Suncorp Stadium this season for at least three home matches after spending the past two years playing all their home games at Redcliffe venue Moreton Daily Stadium.

“The players are very excited about it,” he said.

“Our long-term future is back in Brisbane, and everything we’ve gone through was some short-term pain for long-term gain.

“We’re now ready to bringing all our operations back to Brisbane. There have been a lot of changes for the better at the club on and off the field.”

The Roar will continue to train at Carrara on the Gold Coast for now but could to move to a Brisbane base during the season.

The club has also announced that BuyYourCar.com.au has become its new principal sponsor on a multi-year deal.
