Football fans’ tasteless banner protest against Queen’s funeral

A banner protest has sent a message to the Royals with a demand for “respect” ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday.

Bayern Munich fans have displayed a tasteless banner during their team’s blockbuster Champions League showdown with Barcelona.

Spectators inside the team’s official active supporters section on Wednesday morning showed a banner protest against the impact the Queen’s funeral has had on European football schedules.

Some Premier League matches will resume this weekend after all games in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were postponed indefinitely last weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week.

Earlier, England’s Football Association (FA) and the English Football League (EFL) also announced matches will resume from Wednesday.

The biggest impact has been on a Champions League match between Scottish giant Rangers and Italian club Napoli with the match in Glasgow being delayed 24 hours and visiting fans banned from attending.

A Europa League contest between Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven in London has also been delayed.

The frustrations of some fans were on show at Munich’s Allianz Arena during the German club’s 2-0 win on Wednesday morning.

In the 26th minute of the match, fans were seen holding up a banner that read: “Last minute match delays and bans because of a royal’s death? Respect fans!”

Some of the postponements are as a result of security issues while the UK’s security forces are stretched to the limit by the Queen’s funeral arrangements.

As many as a million people are expected to file past her body between now and the morning of her funeral, on Monday, with visitors allowed in to Westminster 24 hours a day.

In arguably the biggest security operation in Britain’s history, police will check bags and keep people moving as they queue for as long as 35 hours for a glimpse of the late monarch’s coffin.

The home fans in Munich had plenty to celebrate late on Wednesday morning after their team’s big win.

Two second-half goals in three minutes, including a superb chip from Leroy Sane, set-up the win on the same night Robert Lewandowski’s returned to face his former club.

Bayern’s France defender Lucas Hernandez headed in a corner to open the scoring, but it was Sane who put the game beyond doubt for the home side.

Former Manchester City forward Sane, who scored one and created another in Bayern’s 2-0 opening Champions League win at Inter Milan, helped turn the match, which was well in Barca’s favour after a furious opening half.

Bayern travel to Barcelona for the return fixture on October 26th.
