MANCHESTER United were kept scoreless by Newcastle but it could have been very different had Wayne Rooney’s sixth minute goal not been controversially ruled out.

MANCHESTER United’s goalscoring woes in the Premier League continue, held at home by Newcastle United in a 0-0 draw — but it could have been so much different.

Coming off the back of a convincing win in the Champions League midweek, Wayne Rooney thought he had given Manchester United the lead in the sixth minute only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The skipper had raced through in behind to get on the end of an Adnan Januzaj through ball and the flag went up as he slotted the ball beyond goalkeeper Tim Krul.

But replays suggest the decision was harsh, with Rooney in line with the last defender, or at the very least benefit of the doubt should have gone to the attacker.

The Red Devils then couldn’t find a way past a desperate Newcastle defence, coming off the back to their 2-0 loss to Swansea last week.
