LOUIS Van Gaal’s search for a new goalkeeper has come to an end, with Manchester United confirming the signing of Argentinian international Sergio Romero on a three-year deal.
Romero was a free agent after his contract with Serie A club Sampdoria ended last season and was an integral part of his country’s run to the final of the 2014 World Cup.
Speaking of the transfer, manager Van Gaal those performances, as well as their time spent together with AZ Alkmaar, were what attracted him to the 28-year-old.
“Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper,” Van Gaal said. “He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United.
“He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind! He will be a great addition to the team and I am looking forward to working with him once again.”
Van Gaal was on the look out for new goalkeeping stock after Victor Valdes was told he was no longer need due to failing to follow the club’s philosophy and turned to Romero who has struggled for first team football in the past two seasons at Sampdoria and AS Monaco.
There is also lingering doubt over the future of No.1 David De Gea, although the Spaniard impressed in United’s 3-1 pre-season win over Barcelona.

The manager added: “I know (Romero) very well and I think in our situation, if De Gea is going or not going, it is always a threat and we have to take care, make sure that we are prepared and that is why I think it is very good that Sergio Romero is now a Manchester United player.”
Now competing with De Gea, Romero said the move to the Premier League giants was a “dream come true”.
“I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United,” he said. “To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me. Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.”
