Friendly wrap: Man United smash LA Galaxy in van Gaal’s debut, Liverpool beaten, City win
PRE-SEASON WRAP: Manchester United opens the Louis van Gaal era in style, Liverpool goes down to Roma while Spurs and City pick up wins.
SIX Premier League teams have run out for pre-season friendlies in the United States, with Manchester United’s 7-0 hammering of Los Angeles Galaxy in Louis van Gaal’s first match in charge, the pick of the action. Read on for our wrap.
Manchester United 7 (Welbeck 13th, Rooney 43-pen, 45, James 62, 84, Young 88, 90) Los Angeles Galaxy 0
Manchester United made an impressive debut under coach Louis van Gaal on Wednesday night (US time), with Wayne Rooney scoring twice late in the first half of a 7-0 friendly victory over LA Galaxy.
Ashley Young and defender Reece James scored two second-half goals each as United opened its summer tour with a surprisingly polished win over MLS’ overmatched Galaxy in the Guinness International Champions Cup.
Danny Welbeck scored the first goal for Van Gaal, who has had limited work with his new club after leading the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup earlier this month. United still outclassed the Galaxy in the meeting of David Beckham’s two former clubs.
Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera also made their United debuts, with the latter particularly impressive in central midfield.
Roma 1 (Agger 90-og) Liverpool 0
Liverpool striker Fabio Borini suffered a shoulder injury in the Reds’ 1-0 loss to Roma at Fenway Park in Boston.
A Daniel Agger own goal in the 90th minute gave the Italian’s victory in a dour contest.
Twenty-three-year-old Italian Borini, a former Roma standout before coming to Liverpool, fell in an early tackle and came up holding his shoulder.
Liverpool said during the match that Borini’s shoulder was not dislocated but further examination was needed in a tough setback during the opening minutes of the English Premier League side’s pre-season US tour.
The only goal of the match came in the dying seconds of regular time when Roma’s Marco Borriello bent his right leg and redirected a corner kick off Danish defender Agger, past Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones, and into the net.
Manchester City 4 (Zuculini 3, Boyata 45, Kolarov 72-pen, Iheanacho 88) Sporting Kansas City 1 (Sapong 30)
Bruno Zuculini or Kelechi Iheanacho are Manchester City players just yet, but both scored as the Premier League title holders got their tour off to a flyer at Sporting Park, defeating Kansas City 4-1.
Zuculini will officially be a City player once the Premier League ratify his move from Racing Club, and Nigerian striker Iheanacho is just a triallist ... for now.
Dedryck Boyata and Aleksandar Kolarov were the other scorers as City eased to victory over the current Major League Soccer champions, who pegged a goal back through C.J. Sapong.
Tottenham 3 (Lamela 16, 40, Townsend 85) Toronto 2 (Wiedeman 64, Hamilton 72)
In Canada, Erik Lamela showed exactly why Tottenham paid the big bucks for him with a brace of goals in a 3-2 win over Toronto FC .
The 22-year old Argentine, who made just nine Premier League appearances last season, scored two first-half goals, with winger Andros Townsend Spurs’ other scorer.
Andrew Wiedeman and Jordan Hamilton were the scorers for the hosts, but the damage had already been done by Lamela.
Aston Villa 2 (Weimann 44, N’Zogbia 49) Dallas 0
Aston Villa opened their tour in impressive style, seeing off FC Dallas 2-0 at the Toyota Stadium, much to the joy of manager Paul Lambert.
Goals from Andreas Weimann and Charles N’Zogbia earned the victory for the visitors against a spirited MLS outfit.
Colombus Crew 2 (Bedell, Paladini) Crystal Palace 2 (Murray, Gray)
Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak made his first appearance since the World Cup, as Crystal Palace were held to a 2-2 draw by Columbus Crew.
Goals from Glenn Murray and Jake Gray either side of half time had put the Eagles 2-1 up, after they had fallen behind to an Adam Bedell header.
But a late equaliser from Daniel Paladini denied Tony Pulis’ men victory in Ohio.
