ARSENE Wenger says Arsenal may have made a mistake not signing Andrew Redmayne after the goalkeeper’s stunning performance for Sydney FC on Thursday night.
The friendly match ended 2-0 to the Gunners, but the scoreline would have been far more lopsided had it not been for Redmayne’s heroic saves against the club he supports.
And Wenger had to be reminded that Redmayne also spent two weeks on trial with the north London club.
MATCH: Lacazette scores as Arsenal stroll to victory
“I don’t remember — it’s such a long time I’m at Arsenal I do not remember all the trialists,” Wenger said. “If he was with us, we made a mistake.
“At the end of the day I’d say their goalkeeper was man of the match.”
Sky Blues coach Graham Arnold wasn’t surprised at the performance of Redmayne, who is now looking to take over the No. 1 spot following the departure of Danny Vukovic.
“I’ve always had a lot of faith in Andrew Redmayne,” Arnold said.
“I was very happy for him, especially against a team that he idolises.”
Over 80,000 fans packed into ANZ Stadium for the match and Wenger was thankful for the huge turnout for Arsenal’s first match of their Sydney tour.
Most of the fans would have left feeling thrilled after seeing Alexandre Lacazette score on his debut and Wenger says it was an important goal for his new record signing.
“It’s important he gets that off his shoulders because you expect to score as a striker,” he said. “You could see he was happy. What we look for overall is basically to play at a good pace and develop our collective game. for long periods in the game that was quite good for us.”
Wenger was also impressed with Sydney, especially the fact that they “didn’t die physically”.
“They gave it tough the opposition, because they did fight for every ball.
“Overall I think they played in an intelligent way for the whole game. I was surprised how well they defended in their final third, we had to really push to create clear-cut chances.”
