Dwight Yorke parts way with Macarthur FC ahead of expected move to Sky Blues

Dwight Yorke and Macarthur FC have parted ways, but the former Manchester United star seems set to remain in the A-League.

Dwight Yorke has parted ways with Macarthur FC and is poised to replace Steve Corica as coach of Sydney FC.

Former Manchester United star Yorke was in his first season in charge of the Bulls, who were beaten 1-0 by Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Friday night.

It was Macarthur’s sixth loss from 13 matches this season.

The Bulls – who Yorke led to Australia Cup glory before the start of the A-League season - released a statement on Saturday night confirming a contact termination agreement had been reached to allow Yorke to “pursue other opportunities”.

Yorke’s assistant coach at Macarthur, Russell Latapy, will also leave the Bulls.

Club president Gino Marra said: “I would like to thank Dwight Yorke and his assistant Russell Latapy for their contribution towards our club and, in particular, Dwight leading Macarthur to our first silverware with our 2022 Australia Cup triumph.”

Yorke was grateful to the Bulls for giving him his first chance as a professional head coach.

“I want to thank the chairman Gino Marra, CEO Sam Krslovic, all the ownership group as well as all the staff, fans of Macarthur FC,” Yorke said.

“I leave the football club with a great team that will continue to challenge for more silverware”.

Yorke’s departure from the Bulls led to immediate speculation that he will take over the struggling Sky Blues from Corica, whose side’s disappointing season continued in Hobart on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 by Western United.

It was Sydney’s seventh defeat in 13 games this season, with the five-time A-League champions under immense scrutiny after failing to play finals football last season.

“We should be doing better than we are,” Corica said.

“It’s halfway through the season and there’s a lot of work to do.”

Corica and Yorke were teammates in the Sydney side that won the inaugural A-League title in 2006.

Sydney FC is back in action on Thursday against Melbourne Victory.
