Chelsea manager eases fear about extent of leg problem suffered by Matildas captain Sam Kerr
Matildas fans seemingly shouldn’t be concerned by a leg issue that forced Sam Kerr off in Chelsea’s big win over Everton.
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has dismissed fears that Matildas star Sam Kerr suffered a major leg injury in the Blues’ 7-0 English Women’s Super League win over Everton.
Having scored early, Kerr was replaced in the 32nd minute after succumbing to what seemed to be an ankle injury.
With the FIFA Women’s World Cup only 10 weeks away, it was not the sight Matildas fans wanted to see.
However, Hayes didn’t seem too concerned after the match.
“She’s fine,” Hayes told the Chelsea website.
“She wasn’t feeling very well last night. (She was) a bit dehydrated, cramped up a little bit in her calf, but we decided not to take any risks.”
The day before the game, Kerr led the Australian delegation as flag bearer for King Charles III’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey.
“She thoroughly enjoyed it. She said she was really nervous walking behind the King and the Queen,” Hayes said.
“It’s not something you do every day, and it’s a proud moment for her family, Australia, and of course for all of us.
“What an honour for her.”
A Football Australia spokesman said the sport’s national governing body was yet to hear the extent of Kerr’s leg problem.
