Chelsea in Sydney: Stars Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic going on shopping spree
ON Monday was the shopping spree. On Tuesday night comes the scoring spree.
ON Monday was the shopping spree. On Tuesday night comes the scoring spree.
Ahead of their historic clash with Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium, Chelsea stars Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic spent a cruisy day splashing the cash in the Sydney CBD’s most upmarket stores, including luxury fashion house Harrolds.
But don’t worry, they can afford it.
The duo’s combined annual earnings of $26.4 million tops the A-League’s $25.5 million salary cap for all 10 clubs and their 230 players.
Chelsea, backed by their billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich, splashed out $63 million to land Spanish striker Costa in the off-season as manager Jose Mourinho went on to deliver the club their fourth Premier League title in a decade.
Mourinho has vowed to start his strongest side as his English Premier League champions rounded out preparations for tonight’s match with an open training session in front of 10,000 fans - and the EPL trophy - at ANZ Stadium.
“We’re not really used to seeing supporters at training so it was nice to have them here,” defender César Azpilicueta said last night.
“This kind of tour we do to be with fans around the world who cannot be with us the whole year.
“To bring the trophies is massive for the supporters, so they can see them for real.”
Officials have reconfigured tonight’s venue to create extra seating space and are hopeful os setting a new corecord post-Olympic ground record.
It current stands at 83,833 after last year’s NRL grand final between South Sydney and Canterbury.
Those unable to secure tickets for the match flooded into ANZ Stadium last night, with more than 10,000 Chelsea fans watching the Blues be put through the paces in a training session.
“We’re not really used to seeing supporters at training so it was nice to have them here,” Azpilicueta said.
