WELL, Adelaide United’s Awer Mabil has certainly found a way to get the world talking about the A-League.

Albeit, an embarrassing one.

The 19-year-old was gifted the easiest of chances in front of goal against Perth Glory on Sunday, but could only manage to send the ball looping agonisingly over the crossbar from point-blank range.

In his defence, it was a slightly awkward height. But only slightly. And the ball was not exactly travelling towards him at great speed.

Fortunately for Mabil — a Kenyan-born South Sudanese-Australian player — he had already scored Adelaide’s second goal in the 2-0 win, so he was able to laugh it off.

The UK press weren’t so forgiving.

“The teenager put forward his contender for miss of the season — and it’s truly shocking,” wrote the Daily Mirror’s Liam Prenderville.

“With the goal at his mercy, the 19-year old somehow managed to knee the ball over from all of two yards!

“Mabil did score Adelaide’s second in the win but he’ll never live this one down.”

The Metro said: “This A-League horror miss has got to be the worst chance we’ve ever seen fluffed.”

Sports website Bleacher Report added: “Mabil produced a bit of comedy in front of goal in the A-League that he’ll likely want to forget as soon as possible.

“Adelaide were already ahead by two and Mabil was already on the scoresheet, so it was harmless in the grand scheme of things, but it still made for great viewing pleasure.”

Fortunately for Mabil, he’d scored earlier in the match.
