Aston Villa striker Danny Ings searching for more Queensland Champions Cup goals

Aston Villa has no intention of showing Brisbane Roar any mercy in the Queensland Champions Cup.

Having found the back of the net against Leeds, Aston Villa striker Danny Ings is hungry for more Queensland Champions Cup goals in Townsville on Wednesday night.

The three-team, pre-season tournaments ends at Queensland Country Bank Stadium with a match between Villa and Brisbane Roar.

Villa is backing up from a 1-0 weekend win over English Premier League rivals Leeds at Suncorp Stadium.

Having started on the bench, Ings scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot after entering the contest in the second half.

“I was slightly disappointed that I came off the pitch with only one, but it’s always a nice feeling when you hit the back of the net,” said the Liverpool and Southampton marksman, who turns 30 on Saturday.

“We know that we need to get a lot of fitness over this period, but at the same time we want to win games and get into that habit.”

Villa arrived on Townsville on Tuesday afternoon, with manager Steven Gerrard saying the match against the Roar was another opportunity for his team to “maximise 90 minutes of football”.

“We expect the best version of Brisbane Roar,” Gerrard said.

“It’s a fascinating game. We’ll be slightly different in terms of how we approach it personnel wise.”

Roar coach Warren Moon said he would make a couple of changes to the team that started in Brisbane’s 2-1 loss to Leeds last Thursday night on the Gold Coast.

He also reiterated his attention to give new signing, former Queens Park Rangers and Southampton striker Charlie Austin, some game time after the 33-year-old English marksman took no part in the match against Leeds.

Austin impressed at the Roar’s training session in Townsville on Tuesday.

“We did some crossing and finishing, and something happened that hasn’t happened in two years – we scored a lot of goals from the crossing and finishing,” Moon said.

“Charlie just kept scoring. They are already encouraging signs.

“You can see Charlie’s class, and it was really pleasing.”

Moon said Austin was “pushing hard” to prove he was ready for the Roar’s Australia Cup round-of-32 clash against NPL Victoria club Heidelberg in Melbourne on Wednesday week.

“He’s a winner. He wants to be involved in that Cup game,” the Roar mentor said.

“What he’s brought to the environment already is a winning mentality and I’m quite excited that we’ve signed him.”
