GOALKEEPER Andrew Redmayne’s career was in limbo last May when he was told by Melbourne City that he was no longer required, despite having a year to run on his contract.

He was entitled to dig in and collect his weekly wage, sitting behind incoming Thomas Sorensen and Tando Velaphi in the pecking order, but the crucial call came from Western Sydney.

“I was just told that an experienced keeper had come in and I’d be a fair way down the pecking order so if something arose free to go,’’ Redmayne said.

“Then ‘Spider’ (Zeljko Kalac) called and I didn’t look back.

“Complete honesty is what I’ve received from the Wanderers from day one — he said we’ve got to tweak every aspect of your game, and from our first game of pre-season until now we’re always working.

“It was a bit of a turbulent time at Melbourne, but I’m just fully focused on the Wanderers now and driven to achieve success.’’

Just like Redmayne unexpectedly displaced Clint Bolton to debut mid-season, he was suddenly dropped for Tando Velaphi last season, capping off a rollercoaster three years.

Ironically the Wanderers have released Dean Bouzanis to City, due to Redmayne’s form and signing up experienced Liam Reddy, with Sorensen’s back up Velaphi off to Japan.

Redmayne was a shock signing by the Wanderers, with many still in disbelief that Asian player of the year Ante Covic was released.

After 13 rounds, Redmayne is statistically the best keeper in the A-League, playing every game and conceding just 10 goals, paying tribute to former AC Milan and Socceroos keeper Kalac.

“A few main things we worked on were coming off my line and starting deeper so you can attack things, not getting caught too far forward, other than that it’s technical things that seem to be working,’’ he said.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying the changes of influence and couldn’t be happier.

“We’ve got cohesion in the backline, we’re pressing teams quite high and limiting entries into the box and final third which makes all defensive jobs easier. We’re defending boldly and bravely.

“Confidence is flowing through the whole team, everyone’s thriving off that, we’re undefeated in 10 and hope to keep improving.

“It’s a great club to play for, it’s a completely honest and hard working environment.’’

As for the reaction he’ll receive on his latest return to his former home ground?

“Last time there were a few claps and a few boos,’’ he said.
