Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne says he will fight for his spot as new signing Liam Reddy is cleared to play

THE clock is ticking until he faces a major challenge for his spot, but Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne is content to let his performances do the talking.

THE clock is ticking until he faces a major challenge for his spot, but Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne is content to let his performances argue the case to keep his place in the team.

Newly signed goalkeeper Liam Reddy becomes eligible for Western Sydney at midnight on Tuesday when the A-League’s transfer window opens, after his switch from the Mariners.

Despite a widespread assumption that Reddy had signed to be the club’s No 1, Redmayne — impressive in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Adelaide — reiterated that he welcomed the challenge of having three senior goalkeepers in the first team squad.

“You need strong squad depth to challenge for the title,” Redmayne said. “The competition in any spot is extremely welcome, and it’ll help us in our push for the title.

“Everyone brings a lot to the club and the squad. Every individual is very welcome here. All we’ve been told is to keep working on our development, and try to implement the technical changes that Spider (goalkeeping coach Zeljko Kalac) is trying to put into all three of us.”

Western Sydney travel to face Melbourne City on Saturday having lost their grip on first place, with Brisbane easing ahead at the top of the table thanks to their 2-1 win over Perth.

“In the A-League, anyone can beat anyone on their day,” Redmayne said. “There’s a lot of confidence flowing through the team, and we have become a side that’s really hard to beat. You need that in you to challenge for the title.

“We prepare for each game on its merits — it’s another big game against City. Hopefully we can turn in three points.”

Meanwhile, The Wanderers have moved to ease their goalkeeping logjam, with Dean Bouzanis poised to join Melbourne City.

The 25-year-old, bumped down to likely third choice by the arrival of Reddy, missed training on Monday and is believed to have travelled to Melbourne for a medical.

Bouzanis only joined Western Sydney 19 months ago but fell out of favour with the coaching staff during the off-season and hasn’t added to his six appearances for the club.

At Melbourne City he will be back-up to Thomas Sorensen, with current No2 Tando Velaphi negotiating a move to Japan.

Bouzanis, who Liverpool signed from Sydney FC’s youth team, played at the club World Cup for Western Sydney but saw Redmayne usurp him — ironically after being released by City.

Redmayne will now be in a straight fight with Reddy to be first choice, after the latter’s acrimonious exit from the Mariners.
