ANDREW Redmayne is hoping to make the goalkeeper position his own after his heroics against Arsenal at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night.
The Sydney FC shot-stopper was easily the best player on the park as the English Premier League side eventually won the match 2-0.
Once an Arsenal trialist and a lifelong Gunners fan, Redmayne’s stellar performance led Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger to say the club might have made a mistake letting him go.
“It was tongue in cheek almost, but it’s good to get praise off someone of that calibre,” Redmayne said. “It’s a surreal experience and one you can never take for granted.
“It was pretty special. I’ve followed them since I was a young kid. These are players you watch week in, week out that have won numerous World Cups and European Cups, so just to be on the same pitch as them is quite surreal and a fantastic experience.”
Redmayne admits seeing Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech at the other end of the field was also surreal and the two again shared the stage at a Puma event for young football fans on Friday.
Cech says if it hadn’t been for Redmayne, the scoreline would have been far more lopsided.
“He was the man of the match without a doubt because he made some great saves and kept the score the way it finished,” Cech said.
Redmayne is hoping to use the confidence gained from the match to stake a claim for the No. 1 spot following the departure of Danny Vukovic, but he knows Sydney coach Graham Arnold will be bringing in another goalkeeper.
“You need depth in the squad and competition for places and you need more than one goalkeeper, it’s simple,” Redmayne said. “So of course there’s going to be a signing, but nothing will change for me. Head down, bum up and just keep doing what I’m doing.”
In addition to signing a new goalkeeper, who Arnold says will be an Australian, an injury replacement for Rhyan Grant will also have to be found.
The full-back will be out for several months after rupturing his ACL during training and Arnold says he will “exhaust the network” to find a replacement.
“We will search and get another very good right full-back as an injury replacement. We have time, we’re lucky in that regard,” Arnold said.
“It’s in the transfer window and we can search high and wide with our visa spots wide open.”
