ADELAIDE — born Socceroos star James Troisi is on the Reds’ January shopping list, amid rumours he is to be released by his Saudi Arabian club.
SOCCEROOS star James Troisi is on Adelaide United’s January shopping list.
There is talk Adelaide-born Troisi, 27, is on the verge of being released by his Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad during the FIFA transfer window, despite having two years remaining on his contract.
Adelaide’s general manager of football operations, Ante Kovacevic, has revealed Troisi — who became an instant hero when he scored the winner for the Socceroos during this year’s 2-1 AFC Asian Cup final win over South Korea- is a point of interest for the club.
“James is definitely one player we have thought about,’’ Kovacevic said.
“And we’re looking into it.”
Adelaide will have stern competition if Troisi is released, with Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC reportedly chasing the Socceroo.
Troisi can also play as a striker, which has been Adelaide’s major weakness this season but he has played some of his best football as a No. 10.
Adelaide has one spot left on its roster and Troisi is seemingly the perfect fit, given United will also have many AFC Champions League commitments in 2016 if it can get past the one-off preliminary stage clash in February at Hindmarsh.
But, Kovacevic says, Adelaide’s football staff — including coach Guillermo Amor — are also considering the option of chasing a proven outright striker during the transfer window.
“We’d like to think that Eli (Babalj who is injured) still has something to give,’’ Kovacevic said.
“If we bring in another striker we’ve still got Bruce (Djite), Eli and Pablo Sanchez who is another No. 9.
“Most teams play with one No. 9 (so) it will have to be a juggling act.
“In an ideal world if we bring another striker, one of the other strikers move on.”
But Kovacevic will have his work cut out this summer, with Adelaide having little room to move to sign fresh foreigners after three were signed until 2017 under former coach Josep Gombau.
The Reds are now making moves to re-sign some players coming off contract at the end of the season, including regular starters Jimmy Jeggo, Dylan McGowan, Jordan Elsey and Craig Goodwin.
Adelaide is also in the midst of a change of coach for its national premier league side.
Michael Valkanis will not coach the newly promoted side, with the club destined to advertise the vacancy in the new year.
