Perth Glory run riot against 10-man Newcastle Jets by scoring six goals in win
NEWCASTLE Jets have suffered a huge loss to Perth Glory after their captain Nigel Boogaard was sent off for a second yellow card before half time.
NEWCASTLE skipper Nigel Boogaard was sent off for the eighth time in his career as the Jets slumped to one of their worst home defeats at the hands of Perth at Hunter Stadium.
Up 1-0 and seemingly in control early, Newcastle trailed 2-1 at the break before crumbling in the second half.
The Glory running riot against a 10-man Jets side after Boogaard was handed his marching orders in the shadows of halftime for a second yellow card offence.
The embarrassing 6-1 scoreline was only marginally better than the 7-0 thrashing they were handed by Adelaide last season.
Perth’s Chris Harold and Diego Castro both picked up doubles for the Glory in the victory.
The Jets made all the early running with David Carney, Milos Trifunovic and Ryan Kitto all prominent for the home side up front.
Carney missed a golden opportunity to put his side 1-0 up after nine minutes but the radar on his normally trustworthy left foot was off kilter when he blasted into the side netting.
But he made amends just five minutes later when his pin-point corner found Trifunovic at the front stick.
With his defender beaten, the Serbian produced the perfect glancing header that gave Glory keeper Ante Covic no chance.
It was Trifuncovic’s sixth goal of the season and gave his side a deserved early lead but it was short-lived.
The setback appeared to shake the lethargy from the Glory and after Gyorgy Sandor forced a great reflex save from Jets keeper Mark Birighitti 19 minutes in, it was all tied up at 1-1 five minutes later.
Skipper Josh Risdon provided the money ball with Chris Harold taking advantage of some lazy marking to head home.
Striker Diego Castro made it 2-1 to the visitors in the shadows of halftime when he left Jets defender Lachlan Jackson marking thin air with some clever footwork before thundering another past Birighitti.
As if to compound the home side’s miserable end to the half, Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard was sent off by referee Shaun Evans in stoppage time after picking up a second yellow card for a wayward challenge.
It was Boogaard’s eighth A-League red card, pushing him three clear of Kevin Muscat in the bad-boy stakes with the current Victory coach sent off five times during his A-League career.
But if Jets fans thought that was bad enough, worse was to follow.
Central defender Daniel Mullen muffed a clearance under pressure for an own goal just three minutes after the resumption in the second half and that set the tone for a calamitous second half.
Harold’s second goal in the 54th minute to make it 4-1 ended any hopes of an Jets comeback.
